Barbaric Torture in Remand

Secretary General of Hefazote Islam and renowned Alem Mawlana Junaid Babunagari is in very critical condition. He is being kept in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under Life Support Machine in Dhaka’s Bardem Hospital. We were told from a reliable source that he was taken in to ICU unit on Tuesday when his situation became worse after an operation on his leg. Prior to that he was admitted to Bardem Hospital from Prison last Saturday. He was taken for treatment as his leg was rotting. After his admission, five Consultants sat for a board meeting to discuss his condition. The final decision was to operate on his leg after his condition became fatal in the space of a few days. The operation was carried out yesterday. However towards the afternoon when his kidney failed he was put in to Kidney Dialysis machine.

Police and a reliable source from the Hospital told us, Babunagari was wounded and bruised with black marks stretching from his waist down to his legs. Severe and callous torture was inflicted on him during Remand. Hefazote Islam leaders have claimed that severe torture in Remand has led to the life and death situation of Babuanagari. The Law Enforcement Agency have placed two CCTV cameras along with Police to guard the hospital room where Babunagari was being treated.

After he was admitted to hospital, Doctors observed countless wound marks that were visible from his waist downwards and other parts of the body. His blood sugar level was 27. Apart from that he was suffering from other illnesses. A medical board was set up to discuss how to treat him using the latest technology. He is currently being treated under the boards close supervision. Within two days his left leg will also be operated on.

After his admission in to Bardem Hospital, Law Enforcement Agency deployed many of its members to guard the room where he was being kept. Police force was also keeping a close eye on who was entering and leaving the room.  For special security two close CCTV cameras were placed in front of his room number 601 last Sunday.

Director of Bardem Hospital Brigadier General (Retired) Shahidul Haque Mollik told us that to discuss the latest treatment facilities for Babunagari a Board was set up last Sunday. There is an urgent need for the swollen area on his left leg to be operated on. The retired Brigadier said after placing CCTV cameras in front of his room even the Hospital staff were told to be weary when they move about. Currently, except for the Police force or specific Doctors treating him no one else is allowed to enter his room.

Police have claimed that after 13 days of remand were over on 21^st of May and he was brought to court, Babaunagari made an attestable confession. However Hefazote Islam has said that Mawlana Junaid Babunagari was taken in to Remand and severely tortured, he was then forced to make a false confession under Law 164 by the detective branch. Babunagari did not willingly make that confession and later he was forced to sign a written copy of the fabricated confession which the Police are using as evidence.

Police arrested Mawlana Babunagari on 6^th of May from Lalbagh area of Dhaka city. On 7^th of May He was taken in to remand for nine days. Finally on the 16^th of May, Babunagari was given a further 22 days of remand for 3 cases in Mothijheel prison.

ডেস্ক রিপোর্ট : ৬ মে রাত আনুমানিক দেড়টা থেকে ২টা। মতিঝিল এলাকায় হেফাজতে ইসলামের নেতাকর্মীদের ওপর চলছিল আইনশৃক্সখলা ক্ষাকারী বাহিনীর বিক্ষিপ্ত অ্যাকশন। প্রাণভয়ে ছোটাছুটি করছিলেন নিরীহ আলেম ও ধর্মপ্রাণ মানুষ। ঠিক সে সময় বায়তুল মোকাররম জাতীয় মসজিদের দক্ষিণ গেটের কর্নারে আওয়ামী লীগের শত শত কর্মী জড়ো হয়ে হেফাজতবিরোধী স্লোগান দিচ্ছিল। একপর্যায়ে তাদের হাতে থাকা পেট্রল ও মশালের মতো লম্বা লাঠির মাথায় আগুনের কু-লী দিয়ে বায়তুল মোকাররম মার্কেটের ফুটপাতের দোকানগুলোয় আগুন লাগানো শুরু করে। মার্কেটের দক্ষিণ কর্নার থেকে শুরু করে কয়েক মিনিটের মধ্যেই পল্টনের সিপিবির অফিস পর্যন্ত বই ও অন্যান্য ছোট দোকানগুলোয় আগুন লাগিয়ে উৎসব করতে থাকে। এমনই বর্ণনা দেন ওই স্থানে থাকা হেফাজত-সমর্থক এক প্রত্যক্ষদর্শী।

রুহুল আমীন নামের ৪০ বছর বয়সী ওই হেফাজত-সমর্থক জানান, মতিঝিলে হেফাজতের সমাবেশে র‌্যাব, পুলিশ ও বিজিবির অ্যাকশনের খবর পেয়ে সেখানে থাকা তার এক ছোট ভাইকে সরিয়ে নেয়ার চেষ্টা করেন। মোবাইলে যোগাযোগ করে তিনি তাকে সাউথইস্ট ব্যাংকের কাছে আসতে বলে সেখানে অপেক্ষা করছিলেন। হঠাৎ সেখানে পুলিশি অ্যাকশন শুরু হয়। দৌড়ে তিনি একটি গলিতে ঢুকে আত্মরক্ষার চেষ্টা করেন। পুলিশ ও র‌্যাবের মুহুর্মুহু গুলির শব্দে তার প্রাণ যায় যায় অবস্থা। কিছুক্ষণ পর অ্যাকশন শেষ হলে সেখান থেকে বেরিয়ে দেখেন অসংখ্য হেফাজতকর্মীর নিথর দেহ পড়ে আছে। ওই অবস্থা থেকে দ্রুত তিনি গলির মধ্য থেকে বের হয়ে শিল্প ব্যাংকের পাশ দিয়ে স্টেডিয়ামের দিকে চলে যাওয়া চেষ্টা করেন। কিন্তু সেখানেও শত শত পুলিশের ধাওয়া খেয়ে তিনি পল্টন ময়দানের প্রাচীর টপকে ভেতরে ঢুকে যান। ১০-১৫ মিনিট পর পুলিশ সরে যাওয়ায় নিরাপদ মনে করে সেখান থেকে বেরিয়ে কিছু দূর যাওয়ার পরই তিন-চারজন পুলিশের কবলে পড়েন তিনি। অনিশ্চয়তার মধ্যেও প্রাণ বাঁচাতে পুলিশ সদস্যদের কাছে করুণার সুরে তিনি বলেন, তার ছোট ভাইকে খুঁজে পাওয়া যাচ্ছে না, কোনো সাহায্য করতে পারবেন কি না। পুলিশ তাকে ছোট ভাইয়ের খোঁজ বাদ দিয়ে দ্রুত এই এলাকা থেকে চলে যেতে বলে। কোন দিকে যাব, এমন প্রশ্নের জবাবে পুলিশ তাকে জানায়, বায়তুল মোকাররম মসজিদের দক্ষিণ গেটের দিকে পুলিশ নেই, ওই দিকে চলে যেতে। পুলিশের কথামতো তিনি সেদিকে যান। কিছু দূর যাওয়ার পর দেখতে পান, মসজিদের দক্ষিণ গেটের কর্নারে কয়েকশ আওয়ামী লীগের কর্মী অবস্থান নিয়ে জয়বাংলা স্লোগান দিচ্ছে। সেখান থেকেই ফুটপাতের দোকানগুলোয় আগুন দেয়া শুরু হয়। তাদের রোষানলে পড়ার ভয়ে ওই আওয়ামী কর্মীদের জটলার মধ্যেই হাঁটতে হাঁটতে সিপিবির অফিস মোড়ে চলে আসেন তিনি। পল্টন মোড়ের দিকে কোনো পুলিশ না দেখে তিনি দ্রুত ওই এলাকা দিয়ে নিরাপদ স্থানে চলে যেতে সক্ষম হন।

এক সাক্ষাৎকারে রুহুল আমীন আরও জানান, ওই রাতের কথা মনে হলেই অনেকটা বাকরুদ্ধ হয়ে যান তিনি। একপর্যায় বলেন, ঘটনার পর থেকে বেশ কিছুদিন স্বাভাবিক কাজকর্ম করতে পারিনি। ঈমানি দাবি আদায়ে অবস্থানরত হেফাজতকর্মীদের ওপর সরকারের আইনশৃক্সখলা রক্ষাকারী বাহিনী ও সরকারদলীয় ক্যাডারদের এ ধরনের বর্বর হামলা কল্পনাও করা যায় না। তিনি বলেন, ৬ মে রাতের ঘটনা নিজ চোখে কিছুটা দেখার পর সরকার ও মিডিয়ার অপপ্রচার দেখে আরও অবাক হই। কারণ, যে বইয়ের দোকান, কোরআন শরিফ ও অন্য জিনিসপত্র সরকারদলীয় কাড্যাররাই আগুন দিয়ে পুড়িয়ে উল্লাস করল, পরে সেই আগুনের দায় মজলুম হেফাজতকর্মীদের ওপরই চাপানো হয়েছে। এর চেয়ে জুলুম ও মিথ্যাচার আর কী হতে পারে? এসব অপপ্রচার দেখেই বিবেকের দায়বদ্ধতা থেকে মুক্তি পেতে সঠিক ঘটনা পত্রিকায় তুলে ধরতেই তিনি এই স্বেচ্ছায় এই সাক্ষাৎকার দেন বলেও উল্লেখ করেন। আমারদেশ

Evidence Suggests Government Is Hiding True Death Toll

 

Al Jazeera has obtained video footage suggesting that the Bangladesh government has been providing inaccurate death tolls from recent violence.

According to official figures, 11 people had died during fighting between police and protesters from Hifazat-e-Islam, an Islamic group, on May 6, a day protesters refer to as the “Siege of Dhaka”.

Human Rights Watch, a US-based rights group, said that the exact number of deaths resulting from the protests are “unclear”.

“Independent news sources put the figure at approximately 50 dead, with others succumbing to injuries later,” HRW said in a statement on Saturday.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dipu Moni downplayed reports of inaccuracy in government figures.

“There can always be an inquiry, there can always be an investigation,” said Moni.

“The government or most of the people in the country doesn’t even think that there was any controversy with the matter,” she added.

Abdul Jalil, a deaf and mute grave digger at Dhaka’s state-run cemetery, communicated that he buried 14 bodies of bearded men with gunshot wounds after the protest, all at night.

The rights group wants an independent inquiry to find out what happened once and for all.

সমাবেশে মধ্যরাতে হাজার হাজার পুলিশ বিজিবি, র‌্যাব সদস্য ও আওয়ামী
সন্ত্রাসীরা যে বর্বরতা ও হত্যাযজ্ঞ চালায় তার তীব্র প্রতিবাদ ও নিন্দা
জানিয়েছেন ফেনী জেলা হেফাজতে ইসলামের নেতৃবৃন্দ। গতকাল ফেনী জেলা
সেক্রেটারী মুফতী রহিম উল্যা স্বাক্ষরিত এক লিখিত বিবৃতিতে এই প্রতিবাদ ও
নিন্দা জ্ঞাপন করা হয়। এতে বলা হয়, বাংলাদেশ একটি গণতান্ত্রিক দেশ, সরকারের
বিরুদ্ধে গঠনমূলক সমালোচনা করা মিছিল সমাবেশ ও বাক স্বাধীনতা সংবিধান
স্বীকৃত একটি বিষয়। যার ফলে গত ৫ মে মতিঝিলে মহাসমাবেশের আয়োজন করা হয়েছে।
কিন্তু সে মহাসমাবেশে রাতের অন্ধকারে সরকারের পেটোয়া পুলিশ বাহিনী, র‌্যাব ও
বিজিবি শেখ হাসিনা কয়েকজন মন্ত্রী ও কিছু নাস্তিকদের নির্দেশে যে বর্বরতা
চালিয়েছে তা ইতিহাসে বিরল। ইতিমধ্যে মতিঝিলের ঘটনা বিশ্ব মিডিয়ায় আলোচিত
একটি বিষয়ে পরিণত হয়েছে। বাংলাদেশের চ্যানেল ও পত্রিকাগুলোকে সরকার তার
আজ্ঞাবহ কৃতদাসে পরিণত করলেও বিশ্ব মিডিয়ার কন্ঠ রোধ করতে পারেনি। ঐদিনের
হামলা ইতিহাসের হিটলারের নাৎসী বাহিনীর অত্যাচারকেও হার মানায়। যা বিশ্বে
সরকারের স্বৈরাচারী ও বাকশালী চরিত্রের বহিঃপ্রকাশ হিসেবে আত্মপ্রকাশ
করেছে। এ সময় লিখিত বক্তব্যে হেফাজত নেতৃবৃন্দ বাংলাদেশের বর্তমান
প্রেক্ষাপট তুলে ধরে বলেন, সরকার একদিকে নাস্তিক ইমরানকে সমর্থন দিচ্ছে,
রাজিবকে দ্বিতীয় মুক্তিযুদ্ধের প্রথম শহীদ আখ্যায়িত করছে, অন্যদিকে দেশের
ধর্মপ্রাণ আলেম ওলামাদের পাখির মতো গুলি করে হত্যা করছে।
হেফাজতের
কেন্দ্রীয় মহাসচিব মাওলানা জুনায়েদ বাবু নগরী ও ঢাকা মহানগরী যুগ্ম সাধারণ
সম্পাদক আল্লামা আজিজুল হকের ছেলে সহ ২৬ জন নেতাকর্মীকে বিনা কারণে
রিমান্ডে নিয়ে নির্যাতন করছে। অন্যদিকে এক হাজারের অধিক গার্মেন্টস্
শ্রমিককে হত্যাকারী খুনি সোহেল রানাকে জামাই আদরে লালন পালন করছে। ইতিমধ্যে
অর্থমন্ত্রী, স্বরাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী ও নরসিংদীর জনপ্রিয় মেয়র লোকমান হত্যার
অন্যতম হোতা ডাক ও টেলিযোগাযোগ মন্ত্রীর রাজিব উদ্দিন রাজুর বক্তব্যে
হেফাজতে ইসলাম তীব্র নিন্দা জ্ঞাপন করেছেন। পদ্মা সেতুর দুর্নীতি, হলমার্ক
কেলেঙকারী, ডেসটিনির অর্থ আত্মসাৎ ও দপ্তর বিহীন মন্ত্রী সুরঞ্জিত সেন
গুপ্তের কালো বিড়াল ধরার নামে রেলওয়ের সত্তর লক্ষ টাকা বাণিজ্যের সঠিক
বিচার না করে সরকার দেশের আলেম ওলামাদেরকে নিয়ে যে খেলা শুরু করেছে। ৫ মে’র
পর ফেনী জেলার চল্লিশের অধিক আলেম ওলামা নিখোঁজ রয়েছে বলে হেফাজতে ইসলাম
ফেনী জেলা সূত্রে জানা গেছে। এ সময় বলা হয়, সরকার অবিলম্বে এসব আলেম ওলামার
সন্ধান না দিলে এর পরিণতি হবে ভয়াবহ।
